Overview of role

The successful candidate will work in close conjunction with the Head of Group Commerce, as well as with counterparts within the Group in data, analytics, and business support amongst others.

Also, the successful candidate will have to seek to develop strong relationships with those performing a similar role at peer group businesses/banks and to join any appropriate industry forums that will enhance job performance and understanding.

Job description

The overall responsibilities of the role are:

  • Enhancing country, segment and solution (product) management information so as to improve executive and Board understanding and decision-making
  • Increasing awareness and strategic competitive advantage across the Group of key levers sustainable growth, performance and returns
  • Achieve the above through the automated extraction of data from existing systems
  • Identify system enhancements, new systems/processes to improve the quality and/or efficiency of reporting
  • Review and grade subsidiary (and segment, sub-segment, solution, customer, sales agent and access point or channel) performance based on defined criteria/materiality
  • Work with both internal and external stakeholders to identify areas where performance and information gaps exist, and work to close them

Key Accountabilities

  • Enhancing Business Performance Information by:
    • Country - working with Country CFOs to
      • significantly improve the quality, content and timely delivery of management reporting for decision-making (note: this excludes financial reporting and other finance functions)
      • ensure monthly operations calls with Country CMCs cover all opportunities and challenges with commercial impact and that these are being correctly reported
      • ensure that all key business initiatives are included with in forecast and budget plans
      • ensure that quality close deliverables are submitted timeously to ensure accurate reporting
    • Segment – working with country owner GMC members
      • to significantly improve the quality, content and timely delivery of segmental reporting
      • to develop performance dashboards to ensure maximum business benefit is delivered
    • Solution – working with business heads/solution owners to
      • ensure appropriate profitability modelling and stress testing of all new solutions
      • agree pricing, margin and costs changes to maintain profitability
  • Working with Group finance to determine GL sets ups for optimum reporting across multiple dimensions
  • Be a primary driver of the annual Group budget process, as well as more regular performance forecasting, including communicating with impact on key performance expectations, as well as sharing performance insights as they affect forward-targets across all geographies and business models
  • Working with the Credit Management and Data Analytics Team to ensure optimum risk / reward. Additionally, participate in the regular portfolio quality reviews with countries, and track action items and assist countries to achieve the desired outcomes
  • Working with Group Marketing to ensure campaign launches will provide a return on spend. Develop and/or review templates submitted for campaign approval. Review and provide feedback on campaign outcomes to the relevant stakeholders. Maintain record of historic campaigns undertaken
  • Research on key matters that may impact Group financial deliverables and strategy e.g. licensing, minority shareholders, competitor actions, etc
  • Development of regular peer benchmark reporting
  • Identify system and process gaps to enhance management information
  • Work with mobilisation teams to identify key strategic projects and agree on the basis for tracking the performance thereof. Ensure that the relevant structures are put in place at a subsidiary/other level to be able to track at the most granular level(s) required for management reporting
  • Work with the team to determine operational/reporting requirements for both internal and external stakeholders, and ensure the implementation thereof
  • Work with Group Sales to review and revise scorecards to optimise the balance of maximising sales / controlling costs
  • Work with Group Internal Audit to identify gaps, and plan focused reviews to achieve closure of gaps and/or improvement of business performance

Requirements, Education and Experience

  • Minimum requirement of a Masters’ or equivalent in Finance/Business/Strategy and Execution or equivalent from a globally recognised institution
  • Direct involvement in Group / head office roles in demanding multi-geography, multi-divisional operating environments within consumer / retail sectors, ability to gain insight into the most effective commercial routes-to-market and commercial propositions
  • Exposure to multi-national, public-interest entities’ operating structures, governance, risk and control management systems including COSO, ERM frameworks and key sustainability practices
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in group senior leadership, particularly in the areas of business performance and financial management
  • Proven track-record in successfully delivering quantifiable business performance improvement
  • Ability to analyse and monitor the various strategic risks that face the Group – which will require an ability to quickly assimilate and understand dynamics within the Group and its environments
  • Ability to devise solutions to situations, bearing in mind various inherent constraints that surround all matters such as cost control, resource limitations, multi-geography and multi-cultural aspects
  • Ability to develop unique, innovative and practical solutions in collaboration with partners
  • Ability to devise revised strategies to learn adeptly from mistakes
  • Ability to develop good working relations with all partners for cohesion in the business; balanced with leadership, authority, and independence as appropriate
  • Ability to network in our markets and beyond with all relevant stakeholder groups
